lol basically it's the character of a game or whatever you can google it up by putting in FF sprites and it will show you FF characters and weapons and stuff.

sprites are generally pixel art, their characters, objects, settings from video games and cartoons that are ripped from the game. They can be used for lots of stuff (non-commercial stuff that is), very nifty.

its a cutout, like a still or animated frame of a character. So if you had homer simpson drinking a beer in an episode, you could rip out the animation of homer simpsons drinking - so that you could make it in to an animated gif. You basically remove the background, and rip just the cartoon of the character.

Try looking in the RuneHQ forums if you have any graphics software in general. They have a lot of great tutorials on graphics. If you use GIMP, go to gimptalk.com. They have millions of GIMP tutorials on everything.

i only know about sprite is when I create animation using swishmax, theres an option in creating sprite in the scene of animation
